Episode 2: State Tax Abatements

Do you want to pay little or no property taxes on your home or other property? Getting VA disability compensation could do that.

Hi I’m Todd Wesche, the founder and managing member of Vetus Legal LLC. We are Veterans, their dependents and survivors obtained from the VA. The disability compensation benefits that they were promised, they earned, and they deserve. That’s all we do.

One of the understated benefits of being awarded VA disability compensation is what happens when you get to a 100 percent disability rating.

We call that totally disabled. Most, if not all, states offer some level of property tax abatement or waiver for 100% or totally disabled veterans. Of course, each state has its own rules requirements. But here’s a sample of what some states offer to qualified veterans.

For example, New Jersey has a 100% property tax exemption for those veterans who are honorably discharged and rated at 100% disabled, who are also deemed to be permanently and totally disabled.

This benefit can pass on to surviving spouses or domestic partners of such veterans, in some circumstances.

New York provides a tax exemption equal to one half of the disability rating assigned by VA, multiplied against the assessed value of the property. So, a 100% disabled veteran gets a 50% reduction in the assessed value of the property up to a set amount.

And Connecticut offers up to 100% tax exemption for real estate, based on disability level and other factors. If the veteran doesn’t own any real property, such as a home, the tax abatement can apply to a vehicle as well.

Imagine saving potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime in property taxes alone. Of course, you must have your military caused disability recognized by VA and granted the 100% disability rating and meet all the other state local requirements.

But if you’re not already 100%, please contact us to see if we can help you become eligible for these benefits.
